Core A: My Relationship to Asia
Far Yet Close
My present relationship to Asia right now is paradoxical because I am physically distant from the continent, my country, hometown, and family, and yet currently discovering its history on the other opposite side of the globe. Leaving Asia nurtures and strengthens my Asian identity because as I try to fit into the American culture, numerous challenges arise that initially test my identity and gradually teach me to value it. The Vietnamese language is a beautiful language to learn, but I rarely put any significant meaning into the fact I can speak Vietnamese. However, after coming here, I recognized the uniqueness and beauty in my native language and appreciated it more, so I began sharing it with my American friends. Right now, I’m specifically interested in South Korea because of its rising entertainment industry. Watching Korean shows such as Vincenco or Crash Landing on You and listening to Korean songs such as For Lovers who Hesitate by Jannabi are my ways to learn about their language, culture, people, and way of life. They open me to a hidden side of the country that I can’t learn from textbooks. I think the world is missing out on numerous outstanding Korean shows and songs because the spotlights have only put on certain ones. The “unpopular” shows are the hidden gems that I hope viewers would enjoy watching and unexpectedly experience emotions they have never felt before.
